Friday, October 31, 2008 4:52 PM CDT
Baseball southpaw Al Hrabosky, monikered the 'Mad Hungarian,' welcomed 470 guests to the inaugural Stan Musial 'Hall of Fame' Gala at the Ritz-Carlton. “One of our servers at tonight's banquet was once a resident of Covenant House,” said Hrabosky. “She is so grateful for her start in the community.”
The event's proceeds will provide support for Covenant House, a refuge for homeless and at-risk youth between the ages of 16 and 21, help empower these young adults for a fuller life, nurture their career aspirations and assist them in acquiring their education.
“It's our tenth anniversary,” said executive director Suzanne Wagener, as she thanked all whose year-round leadership, financial support and volunteerism have given vulnerable youth a brighter future.
Most Valuable Player honorees were National Baseball Hall of Fame legend Stan Musial and his wife, Lillian. Dr. Fred Rottnek was awarded Outstanding Volunteer for providing free medical care to Covenant House youth for ten years, and Rex and Jeanne Sinquefield received the Spirit of Philanthropy Award.
This past year, more than 3,500 homeless youth were provided services from Covenant House Missouri which serves youth state-wide, but is currently the only nonprofit serving homeless youth in the City of St. Louis.
